Dolphins in Loch Linnhe

Spotting Dolphins used to be quite the rarity in Loch Linnhe, with maybe only a couple of dorsal fins spotted poking through the water each season in Loch Linnhe but in August 2023 they decided to extend their fleeting visit and have been spotted regularly between their trips further out to sea to feed!

Out on the water we have been treated to some absolutely epic dolphin sightings on both our daytime and summer evening cruises courtesy of this very energetic and playful pod in Loch Linnhe. It is not entirely clear exactly why they chose to stick around for longer than usual but one theory is that while the Corran to Ardgour ferry was out of service for a large part of the summer, Loch Linnhe was a quieter and more peaceful place for them to spend time.

 

 

Over the summer, while the Corran Ferry was out of action, our larger vessel, Dunara, was operating a shuttle service running from Fort William to the town of Ardgour so that the residents of Ardgour whose usual 25-minute drive to Fort William using the ferry is stretched to around an hour using the alternate route, can have easier access to the town.

The shuttle service and our sightseeing tours often depart Fort William pier and travel down the loch at similar times which has brought with it a pleasant yet unexpected side-effect. As the two vessels travel along the water, the excitable Dolphins ride the bow wave of the larger vessel Dunara while our sightseeing cruise passengers aboard Elsie enjoy the show with a fantastic view!
