Common Seal (Harbour Seal)

These charming creatures, often recognized by their distinctively hollowed-out face and V-shaped nostrils, add a touch of magic to this already picturesque tidal sea loch.

They can dive up to an impressive 160 feet (50 meters) in search of their preferred sustenance: a diet primarily consisting of fish and shellfish. After a successful underwater foray, common seals often take a break on rocky outcrops like the aptly names Seal Island in Loch Linnhe. These resting spots provide a peaceful respite for the seals, allowing them to digest their food and regain their energy. When reclining on the rocks, they typically assume a distinctive banana-shaped posture, their bodies curving in a relaxed and contented manner.
The size of common seals can vary, with adults typically ranging from about 4 1/2 feet to 6 feet in length (1.4m-1.8m). Their weight can be substantial, with adults weighing between 16 to 18 stones (100kgs-120kgs). These seals are known for their longevity, with an impressive lifespan of 20 to 35 years.
